News & Tips
Welcome to the Rio PlaysForSure Audio subscription support page! Here, you’ll find some frequently asked questions and answers about the update process, along with the firmware you will need to update your Rio player to add the PlaysForSure subscription service capability. A quick tip before you begin – don’t forget to synchronize your Rio player to your PC before you update the firmware (Rio’s knowledge base on our web site’s support section can help you through synchronization setup if you need help). Using Rio Music Manager to synchronize your player is easy. If you don’t synchronize up your player with your PC, you may lose your favorite music if you don’t have a copy of your music stored on your PC.

Before You Update FAQs

Q: What are the operating system requirements for upgrading to PlaysForSure?

A: PlaysForSure subscription only works with Windows XP SP1 or later. PlaysForSure does not support any previous version of Microsoft Windows. While you can install the firmware on your player and use the player on your pre-Windows XP PC as you always have to download individual tracks, your PC will not work with the PlaysForSure online subscription services. If you have further questions on operating system support, please visit http://www.playsforsure.com

Q: After I update my Rio player firmware, will I still be able to purchase music by individual song downloads?

A: Yes, once the firmware has been updated, your Rio player will support both PlaysForSure download and subscription services.

Q: Do I need to back up my Rio player before updating the firmware?

A: Yes, while you should always back up your music (and Rio Music Manager is perfect for this task), you will need to back up the content on your player prior to updating the firmware since part of the update process formats the player's hard drive, erasing all content, to support both download and subscription services.

Q: Once I have updated my Rio player firmware, can I still download CDs I ripped on my PC to my player?

A: Yes, after your Rio player is updated, it will function just like before, but now with the ability to also support PlaysForSure subscription services.

Q: Why does Rio only support the Carbon and ce21xx products with PlaysForSure subscription?

A: For both business and technical reasons, Rio has elected to only support the current products listed on our PlaysForSure support page. There are no current plans to support other previous Rio MP3 players.

Q: Which online music stores support PlaysForSure subscription download services?

A: An updated list of the supporting online music stores can be found on the PlaysForSure web site ( www.playsforsure.com ).

Q: Once my Rio player is upgraded, will I need to sign up for a new online music service or update my current online music service?

A: Your online music service will have the instructions you need to begin subscription service once you have updated your Rio player.

Q: Does Rio recommend any particular PlaysForSure subscription service?

A: There are several PlaysForSure subscription services ( www.playsforsure.com ) and more on the way, so you will have several to choose from. They all provide the ability to download millions of songs from extensive catalogs for a basic monthly subscription fee. You'll have the freedom to choose the online service you want, based on your own needs.
